Tell NCDEQ To Oppose Chemours’ Expansion Plans
Sign Our Petition To NCDEQ
Residents of North Carolina are victims of 40 years worth of drinking water chemical contamination at the hands of Chemours' Fayetteville Works facility. We adamantly oppose any plan allowing Chemours to expand its operations at the Fayetteville Works plant in Bladen County, NC.
For more than a generation, DuPont and its spinoff, Chemours, have recklessly exposed communities in North Carolina to dangerous PFAS--often called "forever chemicals"--all the while knowing these chemicals endangered our health.
We are asking N.C. Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) to oppose Chemours' expansion plans.
We're not convinced NCDEQ fully understands how Chemours operates; therefore, they are not equipped to adequately assess a request for expansion.
Chemours has not shown North Carolina they can responsibly and safely operate their Fayetteville Works facility. Instead, we believe Chemours chooses to spend money on misleading advertising in our region verses meeting the basic needs of the residents they harmed.
Chemours' willful malfeasance has gone on long enough. It’s time to say “No More!” Will you join us? Please sign our petition and share it widely.
What They Aren’t Saying
Chemours held two public information sessions regarding their plans to expand. We attended the Wednesday, September 21, 2022 event in Leland, NC. We partnered with Cape Fear River Watch to co-host a public comments event outside the venue—since Chemours refused to offer one. Local residents showed up to share their thoughts. It’s important to note, this was the first time Chemours publicly hosted an information session for downstream residents in the Wilmington area since we learned about GenX five years ago.
These public meetings were legal requirements of the 2019 consent order. We don’t believe Chemours acted as responsible corporate stewards interested in the needs of our community. It was above 90º outside and Chemours only allowed 10 people in at a time. The occupant capacity for the room was 360 people but Chemours restricted access to no more than 50 community members at any given time.

“No More!” Greenwashing
Chemours keeps running this misleading ad called "Future": https://youtu.be/q8YuzJ56PZ0
While other fluorochemical companies are moving away from their dependance on PFAS--Chemours wants to double down and make more in North Carolina--kind of like what DuPont did with PFOA at the Fayetteville Works facility from 2001 - 2014.
Entire nations and the US military are banning PFAS as we speak. Chemours claims to have the world's best and brightest chemists--why are they not being redirected to invest in green chemistry alternatives?
Top 10 Reasons To Say “No More!” Chemours
We know there’s more, but here are ten examples in the last four years alone of why Chemours has not earned the right to expand in NC:
Chemours refuses to provide FREE emergency water to downstream contaminated city water users.
Chemours is actively fighting lawsuits from CFPUA & Brunswick County for tap water upgrades.
Chemours proposed an inadequate plan for their barrier wall.
Chemours is slow walking required toxicity studies from the 2019 consent order.
Chemours is reluctant to fix Lower Cape Fear private well owners' contamination.
Chemours makes private well owners wait 6 MONTHS for free emergency water.
Chemours sued by Cumberland County for failing to meet county needs.
Chemours issued multiple notices of violations by U.S. EPA in 2019.
Chemours failing to control GenX air emissions, NCDEQ issues more violations.

RSVP To Attend Chemours Expansion Meeting
THANK YOU TO ALL WHO ATTENDED THIS EVENT.
WE HAD A GREAT TURN OUT.
It's time to mobilize like never before.
Chemours just announced they want to EXPAND their toxic PFAS production in NC.
How dare they!?! They haven't even fully addressed their facility's existing contamination--which saturated our air, soil, water, food supply--and blood, with extreme levels of PFAS, for nearly 40 years.
This stuff is toxic in tiny amounts. Even 1% of PFAS can potentially be lethal over a lifetime of chronic exposures--are we really willing to risk our lives for this stuff?
Chemours is hosting a public information session at Leland Cultural Arts Center, on Wednesday, September 21st from 5:00pm - 7:00pm.
Chemours will not allow public comment at this meeting. However, are partnering with Cape Fear River Watch to make our combined presence felt. The media will be out in full force. Will you join us?
By RSVPing we will send you talking points and any relevant updates ahead of the meeting in Leland, NC.
